He recorded and released his self-titled debut album in 1999, but it was 2002’s Golden Age of Radio that really got him noticed.

JOHN MCDERMOTT


Discovered while belting out an impromptu rendition of Danny Boy at a party, John McDermott’s star just keeps soaring higher. His Mariposa appearance will be his first ever at a folk festival in Canada. Through three platinum albums, five Juno nominations, international touring and countless appearances on television including Good Morning America, The Today Show and his own PBS television special, John has proven himself as an artist that respects tradition and understands the sentiment behind the music. He has performed duets with Anne Murary, Eric Bogle, Marc Jordan and Ron Sexsmith, and is celebrated for his work in support of our veterans.

RON HYNES


This celebrated songwriter from Newfoundland is frequently called the man of a thousand songs. His body of work, which includes the folk classic, Sonny’s Dream, has been covered by dozens of artists worldwide including Emmylou Harris, Christy Moore, Mary Black, Denny Doherty, Murray McLauchlan, Valdy, John McDermott, Terry Kelly, Prairie Oyster, The Good Brothers, Shaye, The Cottars and most recently, classical soprano Hayley Westenra. Ron’s moonlight career as an actor has resulted in numerous stage, television and film roles. In 2010, a feature film about Ron’s life, The Man of a Thousand Songs, debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival to sold-out audiences and critical praise.

ADONIS PUENTES


Raised near Havana, this Cuban sonero was born to perform. By the age of 21 he had captured the attention of the entire Cuban nation as a finalist on the Mi Salsa competition. Many awards and successes later, this fresh voice recorded lead vocals with the legendary percussionist, Orestes Vilato, whose album, It’s About Time, received a Latin Grammy Nomination in 2009. Juan de Marcos, one of the masterminds behind the Buena Vista Social Club project and leader of the groundbreaking Afro-Cuban Allstars, calls Adonis a Verdadero Sonero (A True Sonero).

BOB WISEMAN


He is known by many for discovering/ producing Ron Sexsmith and being the original radical element in the Blue Rodeo (there was once a radical element), but Bob Wiseman also earned astonishing accolades from David Byrne, Guy Maddin and National Campus Radio – who nominated him for a Governor Generals Media Arts Award last year. The man has to be seen as well as heard as he creates films which screen simultaneously in his live performances on accordion and guitar. Nominated for a Juno for best male vocalist when he released his self-titled debut album in 1990 “In Her Dream”, (reissued by North America’s only musician owned Record Co-op – The Blocks Recording Club) but it was 2010’s play Actionable which led to sold out theatrical runs between Victoria through to Halifax. Actionable – his play about lawsuits and songwriting told through power point, film and song is now being made into a feature film by Jeff Rogers (Suck, Phil the Alien). He’s a genuine cultural renaissance man, and we’re very proud to present him on our Mariposa stage.

Nothing can soothe the soul better than the ska & reggae beats and sounds from a distant island. Okay, so Idlers aren’t actually from Jamaica, but they are from the Rock, and that’s even better. They have brought home numerous awards and accolades from across the country but, to give you a sense of just how completely wonderful they really are, for four years running they’ve been voted the Best Band to Dance To on St. John’s famed George St. With bragging rights like that, who needs a Grammy? They’ll bring joy to your feet, so don’t miss them.

ELISAPIE ISAAC


Raised in Salluit at the northernmost tip of Québec, this French speaking Inuit’s music is inspired and informed by her unique upbringing. Elisapie Isaac’s grandfather would say that, to avoid getting lost, you always have to look where you’ve come from, and that sage advice permeates her solo recording, There Will be Stars. Not so much an album as a seduction from somewhere distant and other worldly, it contains songs that are full of joy and others lined with melancholy; some sounding pop-like and others downright folk; and at times they are simply beautifully sung poems from the North.

CBC named Yukon Blonde one of the “10 Canadian bands destined to break in 2010”, and Chart Magazine touted them as the best band at Canadian Music Week. Armed with a collection of songs written in the back of the van, Yukon Blonde went into the studio in the summer of 2009 to record their first album, which was released in Canada and United States by Bumstead Records to rave reviews by such publication as Exclaim, Under The Radar and Billboard. THE BEAUTIES


This smokin’ roots/country band formed at the Dakota Tavern in Toronto in 2006, and has been building a legion of enthusistic fans ever since. They have opened for Skydiggers, Broken Social Scene, Justin Rutledge and Jason Collett, and have backed up notable songwriters including Ron Sexsmith, Jim Cuddy and Serena Ryder. Signed to Six Shooter Records in 2009, that same year NOW Magazine named the Beauties as the best roots/country band in Toronto. They have recorded with Serena Ryder, releasing a cover of Funeral by Band of Horses, and in June, 2010, they released their first full length, self-titled album on the Six Shooter Record label.

REID JAMIESON


His music has been described as a “juggling of folk, rock and countrified pop”, but he’s probably best known best known for his CD, The Presley Sessions, where he pays tribute to the 1950s and the late great Elvis Presley. A regular performer on Stuart McLean’s Vinyl Café (CBC Radio), Reid Jamieson is a classic Canadian heartbreaker with an incredible voice and a magical way with melodies. His most recent release features Samantha Parton (Be Good Tanyas), Anne Lindsay (Blue Rodeo) and John Sheard. You don’t want to miss this talented and tender troubadour and his first appearance at Mariposa Folk Festival.

In Dusseldorf, Germany, where he was born and raised in a multi-cultural neighborhood, Yeshe was exposed to a unique collision of cultures, customs and music, forming his passion for world music at an early age. He has lived and studied in Africa, Japan, Bali, Korea and many other places around the world, and his musical collaborations and solo recordings alike are world renowned. Yeshe is a musical nomad who expresses his music in a sophisticated style and with distinctly cosmopolitan flavour.

Following a stellar career that began in the late 60s with his celebrated band, Whiskey Howl (disbanded in 1981), Michael Pickett went on to form Wooden Teeth (1976-79) and the Michael Pickett Band ( 1981-2002) before going solo and returning to his acoustic blues roots. Pickett embraces the Blues with style, substance and musical integrity. He now performs exclusively as a solo acoustic artist touring throughout Canada, the US, the UK and Europe, appearing in Blues, Folk, Jazz clubs, coffee houses, house concerts, theatres, festivals, and is no stranger to standing ovations and calls for encores.

An impressive singer-songwriter and performer, Jim Bryson has five critically acclaimed albums under his belt since the launch of his solo career in 2000. This musician’s musician is in the touring band of country singer, Kathleen Edwards, and has toured and recorded with many artists including Howe Gelb, Lynn Miles, Sarah Harmer, and The Tragically Hip. Bryson has toured Canada and the United Kingdom extensively, and most recently recorded with celebrated folk-rock group, The Weakerthans, culminating in the release of The Falcon Lake Incident in October 2010. Now accompanied by a drummer-percussionist, always drawing inspiration, and even greatness, from everyday things, the trio 3 Gars su’l Sofa is known for its love of vocal harmonies and catchy melodies that are perfectly suited for fans of happy songs. Developed in the folk spirit but occasionally flirting with Country, the group’s new show has a distinctly percussive character. 3 Gars su’l Sofa is the ever evolving Guillaume Monette, the proud rebel Meloche, and the social voyeur Nicola Morel. David crosses genres naturally and effortlessly, charming lovers of folk music and fans of pop music alike. When the Mariposa Folk Foundation reunited Ian & Sylvia in the entertainment coup of 2006, they chose none other than David Celia as their backup guitarist.

WENDELL AND WHEATLEY


Katherine Wheatley and Wendell Ferguson are the best of musical pals. Her heartfelt lyrics and stunning voice and his honest yet irreverent humor make their show both moving and hilarious. Their performances have been described as absolutely transcendent or, as another observer remarked, “She didn’t leave a dry eye in the house. He didn’t leave a dry seat”. Wendell is a six time Canadian Country Music Association Guitar Player of the Year who has played with a veritable who’s who on the North American music scene. He’s very funny and, according to Country Music News, he’s “The Victor Borge of the guitar”. SEE Magazine has this to say about Katherine Wheatley, “…man, can this serene red head ever play guitar”.

Marie-Lynn Hammond has been called one of Canada’s best songwriters by no less than Estelle Klein, the celebrated former Artistic Director Mariposa Folk Festival. A co-founder of Stringband, the seminal Canadian folk group and indie-record pioneer, Hammond’s known for her unique voice, her dynamic stage presence, and her brilliant songs, which range from wickedly funny to hauntingly personal—in both official languages. While she was recording Pegasus, her most recent album, Hammond lost one of her sisters to cancer, and after the album’s release she withdrew from the music scene for several years.

JARON FREEMAN-FOX AND THE OPPOSITE OF EVERYTHING


This young fiddler is making some big changes in the world of instrumental music. Having studied under renowned classical violinist, Marc Destrube, served as a disciple of a guru of South Asian classical music in Chennai, India, and apprenticed under the late great Oliver Schroer, Jaron’s music is an exciting cornucopia of diverse influences. When Schroer passed away, he left Jaron his violins, his solo-violin repertoire and many of his stories.

After winning the 2010 Juno Award for Roots and Traditional Album of the Year: Solo, Amelia Curran went on to win Artist of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. Making her debut appearance at Mariposa Folk Festival this year, this singer-songwriter from Newfoundland, now living in Nova Scotia, is described as “a bit like Leonard Cohen being channelled in a dusty saloon by Patsy Cline” by the National Post. A songwriter by trade, but a writer at heart, Curran believes language is everything. You will know what that means when you hear this gifted artist perform her wonderful songs, live at Mariposa.

A gifted and spirited songwriter, Myles won the 2006 International Songwriting Competition in the Folk/Singer-Songwriter category for his tune When It Comes My Turn, where he was judged by the likes of Tom Waits and Brian Wilson. He represented New Brunswick in the Great Canadian Song Quest competition on CBC Radio and his last album, On the Line, won Folk Recording of the Year at the 2009 East Coast Music Awards, where he was also nominated as Male Artist of the Year and Entertainer of the Year. A warm and easy performer, he brings audiences to their feet wherever he plays.

A new collaborative fiddle-based trio of Emilyn Stam, Anne Lederman and James Stephens, Eh?! combines an unparalleled depth of knowledge of traditional Canadian music from throughout the country with innovative original expression. Dedicated to exploring the myriad pathways between the old and the new, Eh?! brings together veteran and young musicians in creative exploration. Eh?! sing and play several instruments: 4 and 5-string fiddles, voices, piano,
mandolin, guitar, feet, percussion and accordion all weave their way through an Eh?! experience. Devoted to collaboration and improvisation, anything can happen at an Eh?! event.

This singer/songwriter had been honing his craft since his early teens before breaking onto the scene with a performance at Hugh’s Room in Toronto. Growing up to everything from the smooth new age jazz to funky soul, he developed his own personal sound and style, probably best described as poppy combined with soulful rhythm and blues. Mike captivates audiences with his acoustic guitar, sand-paper vocals and very personal lyrics. He was featured on the soundtrack of the motion picture, has toured Canada, performed live-to-air on the radio, and has appeared as a guest and featured artist on live television.

THE RUCKSACK WILLIES


Formed in 2008, the Rucksack Willies are a barn burning tour de force of old style country stomping with a solid injection of original songwriting from front-woman, Angela Hilts. Playing around Ontario for the past three years, they have garnered a reputation for having one of the most energetic stage shows in the Golden Horseshoe and beyond. Currently the group is finishing its debut CD. Produced by Michael Eckert and Engineered and mixed by Reuben Ghose, the CD has been painstakingly assembled and perfected to present the full force of the Willies’ live show. Featuring the likes of David Baxter, John Williams (clarinet), and Laura Bates, the record will surely not disappoint.

MLADI GLAS & PLANIKA SLOVENIAN DANCE GROUP


Mladi Glas & Planika Slovenian Dance Group performs variations of folkloric Slovenian dance. Through their highly visual, dynamic performances, these cultural ambassadors promote the values and heritage of the beautiful country of Slovenia. Established in 1974, the Group is making its Mariposa Folk Festival debut this year, and we are very pleased to present this exciting troupe to our audience. Mladi Glas & Planika has performed at various community and cultural festivals, the Montréal Olympics, Queen’s 25th Jubilee, the Canadian National Exhibition, and toured four times throughout Slovenia, Austria, Italy and Germany. Next year they embark on a whirlwind tour of Slovenia with 12 performances scheduled.

Musician, animator, songwriter and poet, Yvan Vollé accompanies his warm husky voice with guitar, ukulele, harmonica and piano. Creating music that is at the confluence of folk, underground and the singer-songwriter style, Yvan is a powerful artist you never forget once you have seen him live. He generously shares his musical gifts while revealing his personal history, maturity, and joie de vivre. This award winning artist has performed many times on Radio Canada (television and radio) and on university campuses and, luckily for us, this summer he is doing the festival circuit, including Mariposa, the Grande Dame of Folk Festivals.

ALEX THE FOLK BAND


Alex the Folk Band is a music-making cooperative known for beautiful harmony vocals and fiddle-based instrumentals. For more than two decades, this Orillia-based group has been performing wherever good people and fun times can be found, including festivals, conferences, conventions, fairs, parties, and church and Legion halls. The band’s repertoire ranges from traditional tunes to contemporary roots-based material. Their gospel set has twice been featured at the John Arcand Fiddle Fest in Saskatoon, and it is a favourite at Mariposa Folk Festival. Join them Sunday morning for a good old-fashioned, rousing, joyous session of soul filling, gospel music

TODD CROWLEY'S MUSICAL PETTING ZOO


Ever pluck a harp or drum on a djembe? Ever womp-womp on a didgeridoo or buzz into a shofar? Ever strum a mountain dulcimer or frail a banjo? All of these traditional folk instruments and about 100 more are part of Todd Crowley’s Traveling Musical Petting Zoo. It is a fully interactive, hands-on exhibition for musicians, young and old, novice to professional. The instruments tell a story of their own each time a child connects to the folk tradition by trying an instrument for the first time, or an adult rediscovers the joy of making music. Check it out – you will be surprised how much fun it is.

TERRY FALLIS


The author of two satirical novels on Canadian politics, The Best Laid Plans and The High Road, Terry Fallis came upon his muse through personal experience, serving as a political advisor and a communications consultant. The Best Laid Plans won the 2008 Stephen Leacock Medal for Humour. It was also named among CBC’s Canada Reads Top 5 Essential Canadian Novels of the Decade, and was chosen the Canada Reads 2011 winner. Terry has always had a thing for hovercrafts, and one plays a supporting role in The Best Laid Plans. Canadian readers have a thing for Terry, and we are very pleased to present this celebrated novelist on our Mariposa stage.

KIRSTEN SCHOLTE & THE FANCYS


Kirsten Scholte grew up listening to folk, rock, country/bluegrass and Celtic music playing in her family’s home. While attending Humber College for a Contemporary Music Performance Degree, she began piecing together her band, The Fancys, and has been performing live with them for more than two years now, playing original repertoire and establishing a unique style in the roots genre. In 2010 Kirsten and the band finished their first album entitled “What I Have is all I Need”. It is a collection of music that expresses values of life, love, rural Canada, and the changes and independence of moving on.

Magoo, is a colourful character, you name it, he’s probaby done it. Singer/songwriter, host, family performer, guitar teacher, backyard shed builder, and fashion plate (Check out Fashion Tips for Tuesday on his Facebook page), all come quickly to mind. He has been writing songs and playing them in clubs, concerts and at festivals across the country since 1974, and he has opened shows for Taj Mahal, Roger McGuinn, The Band, Joe Cocker and David Bromberg among others. He delights audiences both young and old, and is happy to be back at Mariposa, the festival that inspired him to take all this fun seriously.

DENNIS LEE


It is with special pleasure that Mariposa brings back poet, Dennis Lee. Recipient of a Governor General Award, Officer of the Order of Canada, and Toronto’s first Poet Laureate, he is the man responsible for turning thousands of children on to poetry with Alligator Pie, Jelly Belly and other best selling books. On the musical side, Dennis was the lyricist for Jim Henson’s terrific TV series, Fraggle Rock.

A musician, performer, writer and host with a passion for the Canadian experience, David Newland is the force behind The McFlies and co-founder & co-host of the Corktown Ukulele Jam community. He logs dozens of gigs yearly as a solo performer in addition to his many other pursuits, and is Editor-in-Chief for Roots Music Canada, the portal for original organic Canadian music. He frequently appears as a speaker, moderator and panellist, specializing in using new media to build community. We are very pleased to welcome this friend of Mariposa, and roots music in general, back to our stage this year.

MARK DOUGLAS


An active member and cultural leader of Rama First Nation, Mark tells stories that bring Ojibway culture and pride to wider public knowledge. His Indian name, Biidaanakwad (bee dawn e quad) means Cloud Approaching. The son of an Ojibway Chief and Algonquin Princess, Mark has spent a lot of time with Traditional Elders of the Greater Ojibway Nation, learning about his culture. This impressive storyteller generously shares his teachings with his audience.

OWEN MCBRIDE


A veteran folk music performer and storyteller, Owen McBride has built a reputation as an accomplished spoken word artist and performer of Irish folk music. He has performed at most of the major folk festivals, clubs and concerts halls across Canada and the United States. His first appearance at Mariposa Folk Festival was in 1964, and he was a fixture at the festival almost every year until the mid 1980s. His stories and tales were heard regularly on CBC Radio. Mariposa is very pleased once again to welcome back Owen McBride following his reemergence at our 50th anniversary festival, after so many years absence.

A keen observer of people and the world around her, Sherry Lawson is an aboriginal story teller extraordinaire who captivates her audience with a commanding presence. She is working on a third autobiographical writing to follow I’ve Been Shot At, What’s Your Excuse and Don’t Stand Too Close! You Might Get Some On You. Sherry was recently named Orillia Citizen of the Year for her decades of work in the native and non-native communities, and has served as a Justice of the Peace where she developed a reputation for wise, humane and at times unorthodox verdicts.

For the past ten years, the francophone singer/songwriter/performer, Jojo, has been creating wonderful children’s entertainment. Earning three awards from “Le gala des prix Trille Or” for best children’s album and best children’s entertainer, she has released 3 recordings and a DVD. Currently, she is touring three shows to delighted audiences. In the show she will perform at Mariposa, Le Camion Rouge, Jojo crisscrosses the paths of fire safety, with Ordi, Mr. Firefighter and Sparky the dog. It’s a musical show, both funny and educational, that will arouse your curiosity. Let’s sing and learn together to save a life.

Blood and Fire: The Donnelly Primer, combines stories by Susan Charters and songs by Paul Court that examine the century-old debates surrounding the brutal murders of five members of the notorious Donnelly family of Lucan, Ontario, in 1880. The massacre and lack of any final judgement on the perpetrators, has never ceased to be controversial. The truth was so well hidden at the time that the story cannot help but emerge from history told in bits and pieces offering differing opinions of the justice or the brutality of the killings. Blood and Fire reflects this kaliedescope of viewpoints.

Murray Rodger (they call him “Murph”) and Kevin Knight (they call him “Kevin”), will have you rolling in the aisles – well, the grass anyways. Their original sketches replete (now, there’s a funny word) with music, costumes, accents, slapstick, and clean humour suitable for all ages, has Oprah raving about them. We’re just not saying which Oprah. TMZ insiders tell us, very confidentially of course, that you will see this act on the Tonight Show never in your lifetime, so you better catch them at Mariposa when you can. Joining The Medicine Show for their gig at Mariposa is renowned storyteller Brad Woods. Brad has made a national name for himself as a storyteller for both children and adults on his own and with his group The Great Wooden Trio. We welcome Brad back to Mariposa!
