jdEdwardsA lot of great Canadian music has come out of Winnipeg over the decades, and this just might be the decade when The JD Edwards Band sets the Canadian scene on fire.

Anything but a genre driven band, the music of this Winnipeg-based group ranges seamlessly from electric folk-rock to groovy soul vibe to laid back acoustic.

Lured to Canada’s ‘middle city’ by its vibrant music scene, JD Edwards linked up with a clutch of skilled musicians then honed a killer sound.

The band’s live show is in a whole other electrifying category of its own, delivered with contagious optimism and energy, and a full pallet of aural textures.

Led by JD, this six person band, which cites Joe Strummer, Van Morrison, Stevie Wonder and J.J. Cale as influences, is a ‘quenching tonic for thirsty ears’.

kimWempeEvery now an then a young artist with the confidence and depth of a storied minstrel comes along and blows you away. Kim Wempe is an artist like that.

Hailing from a small farming town in Saskatchewan, she is an old soul with artistic conviction.

Some of her pared-down, percussive tunes would have sounded new if they were played decades ago in an old honky tonk. Other originals have an energy that builds and envelops the audience.

Wempe has worked with some of the most appreciated musicians on the folk/roots scene including Joel Plaskett, Old Man Luedecke, Thom Swift, and Geoff Hilhorst of The Deep Dark Woods. She has also received recognition from the East Coast Music Awards as well as Music Nova Scotia.

Her new album, Coalition, is roots-tinged pop/blues, influenced by Americana storytelling and gospel melodies.

darWilliamsA poet of confessional songs, pop-folk artist, Dar Williams, has been described in The New Yorker as one of America’s very best singer-songwriters. She writes from personal experience, many of her songs based on people she grew up with, and she keeps her feet to the fire with subject matter that is sometimes risky but always topical. Recurring themes include religion, adolescence, gender, commercialism, loss, humor, mythology, power and other stimulating motifs.

Dar is also an exemplary citizen, as the many groups she has supported – environmental, feminist, and social-justice – would attest.

Joan Baez was an early fan, taking her out on the road and recording several of her songs. Dar is also associated with Nerissa and Katryna Nields (The Nields), Max Cohen, Gideon Freudmann, John Prine, and Cliff Eberhardt, formed the group Cry Cry Cry with Lucy Kaplansky and Richard Shindell, and has toured with many of the biggest names in folk-roots music.

Mariposa Young Singer/Songwriter Workshops off to a Strong Start

Mariposa Young Singer/Songwriter Workshops off to a Strong Start

LarryLeblancWorkshopThere are benefits to being one of the oldest and most-respected folk festivals in the world, especially when it comes to giving back. Artists recognize the importance of the Mariposa Folk Foundation, and are often ready and willing to offer support beyond their time spent on the stage. This has proven true with the launch of the Mariposa Young Singer/Songwriter Workshops – an interactive, free opportunity geared towards musicians ages 14-21.

bruceWorkshopParticipants are given insight on the industry from veteran music journalist and Mariposa Board Member, Larry LeBlanc. LeBlanc facilitates the workshops, offering his unique perspective on the music business of which he has been a part for decades. He’s also very persuasive, getting some of Canada’s top musicians to co-facilitate the workshops with him.

In the fall of 2013, Bruce Good of The Good Brothers fame was our inaugural host artist. Good built genuine connections with the participants, offering important advice for the aspiring musicians. He also performed a few tunes himself in a rare private performance. With LeBlanc emphasizing the importance of collaboration, the youth were sent home with some ‘homework’, and the beginnings of a musical peer network were formed.

arianaWorkshopThe second workshop took place on January 14 of this year and, for artistic variety, the host artist was 23-year old Arianna Gillis. Despite her age, Gillis spoke and performed like a veteran that had graced stages all over the world. Having already received numerous awards for singing and songwriting, Gillis was a perfect fit for inspiring and assisting youth in attendance as they continue to work on their craft. Like Good, Gillis performed a number of tunes and discussed her road to success, then the participants had a chance to share the stage with her. On some tunes, Gillis even offered additional guitar and harmonies.

Creative types put tremendous thought and effort into their art. Often, this is a very personal process. The Mariposa Young Singer/Songwriter workshops provide youth with a safe and supportive environment to share their creations – a necessary step of growing as a musician.

Mariposa Folk Foundation plans to continue offering these workshops several times a year, and speculation about who the next big-name artist will be has already begun. Watch for future announcements!

Indie Trailblazer Ani Difranco Making a Long-Awaited Return

Indie Trailblazer Ani Difranco Making a Long-Awaited Return

Posted on

aniDifrancoThe influence of Ani DiFranco on fellow musicians, activists, and indie-minded people the world over is huge. She proudly identifies as a folksinger, but her repertoire is spirited medley of soul, funk, hip-hop, jazz, spoken word and other musical genres.

Over the course of more than 20 albums, Ani has never stopped evolving, experimenting, and testing the limits of what can be said and sung. Her tribe of co-conspirators includes everyone from Pete Seeger and the late Utah Phillips to a new generation of twenty-something artists who grew up with her songs and shows. Of course, there’s also the motley crew of folks like Prince, Maceo Parker, Andrew Bird, Dr. John, Arto Lindsay, Bruce Springsteen, Chuck D, the Buffalo Philharmonic, Gillian Welch, Cyndi Lauper, and even Burmese activist and Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, with whom she has crossed paths in myriad ways.

Early in her career, Ani made a choice that was considered brazen at the time – to say no to every record label deal that came her way, and yes to being her own boss. But it is another choice she made early in life – to use her voice and her guitar as honestly and unflinchingly as she could, writing and playing songs that come straight from her own experience, her boundless imagination, her sharp wit, and her ever-more-nuanced understanding of how the world works – that has brought sold-out crowds to her shows around the world, fans debating every nuance of her lyrics, and fellow performers clamouring to work with her.

Ani’s songs deal with contemporary social issues ranging from racism, sexism, sexual abuse, homophobia, and reproductive rights, to poverty and war. Her vocal activism is matched by her actions, whether it’s performing at rallies and protests, or working with her foundation to support grassroots cultural and political organizations on matters ranging from abortion rights to gay visibility.

A diverse, eclectic, authentic and exciting artist, Ani is, above all, an honest-to-goodness folksinger.

unionDukeIt’s not that often that Mariposa Folk Festival books the same act two years in a row, but when they make a huge impression on our audience, sometimes we make an exception. That’s the case with Union Duke, one of the auditioned Mariposa Showcase Acts at last year’s festival that blew the socks off of everyone. This act is a must see.

Union Duke bridges the divide between big city rock and country bluegrass with alacrity and aplomb. Their entwining, rambling banjos, soaring vocal harmonies, plucking electric guitars, and fast, heel stompin’ beat, along with a rough and rowdy sound and really great tunes, will bring you to your feet or have you bopping in your seat.

If you missed them last year, now you can find out what all the ‘cool kids’ are still talking about. These guys are a whole lot of folk rock fun!

Blues Ace Sugar Brown Coming to Mariposa

sugarBrownWhile rubbing elbows and playing with the best blues musicians on the American scene for many years, you learn a lot of tricks. Then, if you get far away from that Chicago scene and spend a lot of time revamping your craft, you can come back North America with a distinctive sound, just like Sugar Brown.

This multi-instrumentalist, blues musician and singer learned his chops playing harmonica as a member of a West Side Chicago blues band that backed the famed singer, Tail Dragger. He earned a reputation as a versatile musician and singer, playing with greats such as Willie ‘Big Eyes’ Smith, Dave Myers, Willie Kent, Johnny B. Moore, and Barrelhouse Chuck. After Tail Dragger was sent to prison for fatally shooting Boston Blackie, Sugar Brown made his way to Japan, where he performed for several years in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Sendai, and Aomori, and began playing guitar in earnest.

Fate would later bring him to Toronto, and providence has brought him to our Mariposa stage.

rosanneCashThe very first artist we are announcing for Mariposa Folk Festival 2014 is Rosanne Cash. We couldn’t think of a better way to begin unveiling what’s shaping up to be one of our best ever line-ups than with this iconic musical figure whose music crosses the genres and the generations.

During her diverse musical career, Rosanne Cash has topped the music charts, gathered loads of accolades and awards, performed or recorded with a veritable who’s who of international stars, and released fourteen albums, with one the way. Though the daughter of a folk-country legend, Rosanne Cash charted her own path in song, drawing upon the folk, pop, rock and blues traditions, and earning a loyal fan base with every step.

With a career in high gear, in the 80s Cash curtailed her work for childbearing and to raise four daughters. She left Nashville and its country music establishment in the early 90s, settling in lower Manhattan with then husband, Rodney Crowell. Cash later married her current musical collaborator, the producer/songwriter/guitarist, John Leventhal, with whom she has one son.

For two and a half years in the late 90s, Cash was unable to sing due to a polyp on her vocal cords. Her musical career was disrupted again in 2007 when she underwent brain surgery for a rare condition. During these musical down times, Cash pursued other creative pursuits including writing, with several books published and numerous articles in prestigious periodicals and collections.

In recent years, Cash released a highly acclaimed album, The List (2009), comprised of twelve songs from a list of the 100 greatest country and American songs given to her at the age of eighteen by her father, Johnny Cash. That album, which features vocal duets with Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Jeff Tweedy, Rufus Wainwright and Neko Case, was named Album of the Year in in 2010 by the Americana Music Association.

Cash’s highly anticipated follow-up album due in January 2014, The River & The Thread, has also received critical, pre-release praise. Inspired by swampy Delta blues, gospel, Appalachian folk, country and rock, it tells the stories of a colourful, multi-generational cast of characters from the south through a collection of contemporary songs.

In addition to her own recordings, Rosanne Cash has made guest appearances on albums by the likes of Guy Clark, Vince Gill, Lyle Lovett, Mary Chapin Carpenter, The Chieftains, and others, as well as on children’s albums. She has also appeared on tribute albums to The Band, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Jimi Hendrix, Yoko Ono, Tammy Wynette and more. Recently, Cash was featured in a global Americana tourism promotional campaign performing her composition, Land of Dreams.

Rosanne Cash with be the headlining act on Mariposa’s Sunday Evening Main Stage, closing the festival with what promises to be one of those concerts that sticks in your mind long after its over. Staring in January, we will begin announcing a few artists per week until the whole fantastic line-up for Mariposa Folk Festival 2014 is unveiled.
