Ian Tyson
We are excited to welcome one of the biggest icons of Canadian music, and a founder of our storied festival, back to the Mariposa stage! Ian headlined the very first Mariposa Folk Festival in 1961, along with Sylvia Fricker (later Sylvia Tyson), and is now celebrating five decades of performance. From classics Four Strong Winds and Someday Soon, to more recent compositions such as Navajo Rug, Ian continues to write with inspired vigor. Ian’s history with Mariposa pre-dates the festival itself, as he was one of the original organizers who helped to found and establish this historic musical event. In fact, it was Ian who developed the original logo (adapted in the late Sixties by Murray McLauchlan to the smiling and winking sun logo in use today).
Ian Tyson is appearing in

A headliner at the very first Mariposa Folk Festival in 1961, Ian is back 50 years later and is just as dynamic and entertaining as ever!
Internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter and multi award winner, Ian Tyson is celebrating 5 decades of performance in 2009 with a full schedule of concerts and the release of a children’s book based on his song “La Primera.”
Ian continues to keep his loyal fans in awe with songs that range from his classics – “Four Strong Winds,” “Someday Soon” and “Navajo Rug” to his newest works which he continues to write with inspired vigor.
At age 76, Tyson maintains a busy touring performance schedule which he combines with the work on his Alberta ranch, which is nestled in the foothills of the Rockies south of Calgary. It's a workload that would exceed that of most people generations his junior.
With the release of “Yellowhead to Yellowstone and other Love Stories” in November 2008, his long-time fans have discovered something else: Ian Tyson has a new voice! It’s his 14th album for the Edmonton based roots music label Stony Plain.
As a true musical historian of the old west and a seasoned horseman, Ian Tyson treats his fans to an intimate performance of music and narrative portraits that begin with his story of the first horse to land on American soil and culminate with 50 years and more of his own life experiences.
