Saturday Evening Headliner: The Good Family

Saturday Evening Headliner: The Good Family

The idea of forming The Good Family band took root when a pair of musician brothers invited their parents to join them on a musical romp throughout Scotland, England and Wales. At some venues they were described as Canada’s answer to the legendary Carter Family. Since then, the band has blossomed to include even more of this talented lineage.

No strangers to the stage and studio, some members of The Good family hail from two of Canada’s premier acts. Bruce and Larry Good are two-thirds of Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame inductees and multiple Juno Award recipients The Good Brothers. Travis and Dallas Good are members of Juno and Indie award winning band The Sadies.

The Good Family 3Rounding out the family is Margaret Good, wife of Bruce and mother of Travis and Dallas. Margaret is also a veteran performer who appears on several recordings by both The Sadies and The Good Brothers. She also sang on Ronnie Prophets’ “Grand Old Country” which aired on CTV for two seasons, backing such artists as Charlie Pride, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Mel Tillis and Dolly Parton to name just a few.

The Good Family talent pool does not end there, with niece and cousin D’Arcy Good adding yet another dimension with her amazing fiddle and outstanding vocals.

And just when you think it can’t get any better, Sean Dean and Mike Belitsky of The Sadies provide a killer rhythm section.

The Good Family’s debut album consists of country ballads, bluegrass, and folk rock all written and performed by the family. Two of the songs are co-writes with Greg Keelor of Blue Rodeo. A guest musician who makes an appearance on the album is their close friend, the late great guitarist Terry Clements of Gordon Lightfoot fame, who recorded his part way back in 1978. How this was achieved is an interesting story in itself. The album was mixed by Michael Timmins of Cowboy Junkies.

It is said that sibling and family harmonies are unique, and The Good Family drives that point home. They play an eclectic mix of music featuring acoustic and electric guitars along with banjo, autoharp, dobro, fiddle, mandolin and rhythms that will keep you grooving and shouting for more.

HYDRA1HYDRA came together at the invitation of Feist to represent her most recent album, Metals, in a completely new live format at the Polaris Music Prize Awards. Joined by two husband and wife duos, Snowblink with their rich and textural ‘soundscapes’, and AroarA with their amplified cigar box twin guitar lines, together they conscripted both the jagged and the lush with mutating voices of not one head but three.

HYDRA2Montreal-based AroarA is a creative duo that amplifies cigar box guitars, uses a 404 sampler to trigger mellotrons and black sabbath bells, blends their voices, and plays twin guitar lines. Their album, In The Pines, is based on the work by the same title of American poet Alice
Notley. It interprets a depression era tableaux laced with quotations from the folk, blues and gospel music of that period.

HYDRA3Starting with her 2004 Juno award winning album, Feist hit the ground running fast. Her next album earned her
four Grammy nominations, six Juno wins, the Shortlist Music Prize, and the opportunity to teach Muppets to count on Sesame Street. She made her Saturday Night Live debut, toured the world, covered an album with Beck, recorded with Wilco, saw Stephen Colbert shimmy in a sequined 1234 jumpsuit, and made a documentary. Then, after resting for a while, she released her album, Metals, which inspired the three-headed collaborative project know as HYDRA.

HYDRA4One of the most compelling voices on the Canadian scene, Snowblink is a duo that describes its music as non-denominational devotional pop from California and Canada. Others have called it dreamy electro-folk. This group has opened for the likes of Feist, Jeff Tweedy, Great Lake Swimmers, and The Hidden Cameras on extended tours throughout the U.S., Canada, and Europe. They have also released two albums to critical acclaim.

Balancing Fervour and Trance, Acoustic and Electric, MAZ is Coming to Mariposa

Balancing Fervour and Trance, Acoustic and Electric, MAZ is Coming to Mariposa

MAZThis exciting quartet has bridged the space between electric jazz and French Canadian folk with brilliant results. They describe themselves as a bold assertion of Quebec’s traditional identity with a modern edge but, to their audience, they’re pure spirit-moving, fun-loving, aural magic. Their debut album, Telescope (2011), garnered a Juno nomination for Instrumental Album of the Year plus three nominations at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. In their dynamic live performances, the band pulls off a daring balance between fervour and trance, and acoustic and electric, on tenor banjo, violin, electric guitar, mandolin, keyboards, bass and podorythmie (footwork like step dancing or flat footing while sitting in a chair).
