Mariposa Showcase

for emerging and under-recognized artists

whitesquiggle

Mariposa Folk Festival has a proud reputation of discovering and launching new talent. One important way we do this is through our annual Mariposa Showcase for up-and-coming and under-recognized performers – an audition in front of panel of judges and a live audience.

Submission deadline for Mariposa Showcase is February 25th, 2017

Making a Submission

We accept electronic submissions only. Please do not attach files to the submission – instead, provide links to your audio/video files online. If these files include musicians who are not part of the submission, please specify which ones. The submission should include only three songs.

A very brief (less than 100 word) description would be helpful but is not necessary.

Ineligibility
Artists/groups are not eligible to participate in Mariposa Showcase if they:

  • Have more than 2 full-length CD recordings
  • Have previously been selected to perform at Mariposa Folk Festival

(Former projects with other bands do not impact eligibility).

Shortlist

A shortlist of artists/groups will be selected to participate in the Mariposa Showcase auditions. Only those artists/groups who are selected to audition will be contacted by organizers. The shortlist will be posted on the Mariposa Folk Festival website – please refrain from inquiring about the status of your submission. No fee is paid or charged to audition, and no expenses, including travel, will be covered.

Showcase Auditions Date, Time and Set-up

The auditions take place in front of an audience in Orillia, Ontario. Each artist/group is allotted 20 minutes to setup and perform, which is usually enough for about three songs. A stage crew will assist with setup. Artists/groups with more than three performers are asked to provide a simple stage plot. Groups of up to 6 performers can be accommodated.

Finalists

A panel of judges will select three finalists from among the auditioning artists/groups. The finalists will be invited to perform at Mariposa Folk Festival. The specific time slot and other details will be detailed in a Mariposa Folk Festival Performer Contract. A non-negotiable, nominal fee is paid to Showcase artists/groups for their performance at Mariposa Folk Festival. Transportation and other expenses are not covered. The final terms of the performance will be discussed with artists before arrangements are finalized.

Mariposa Showcase is not for Established Artists

If you are an established artist wishing to perform at Mariposa Folk Festival, please visit our Artistic Direction page for details about making an artistic submission.
