In 1961 at the peak of the folk revival that saw the likes of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez and Peter, Paul and Mary rise to prominence, the concept of a folk festival was revolutionary.
The seventies, for Mariposa at least, opened hopefully and with abundant energy and potential.
The decade was one of ups and downs in the Festival’s fortunes. In the new world of Much Music videos and big hair, the folkies had a tough time holding on to a big audience.
During the final year in Barrie, unseasonable cold and rain spoiled the fun and the Festival became mired in debt.
In 2015, Mariposa receives the Tourism Industry Association of Ontario’s Award of Excellence for Sustainable Tourism because of the greening initiatives that began in 2009.
Mariposa Folk Festival is an all-inclusive showcase of Canada’s heritage, cultures and talents, and fosters community engagement. Our Festival profiles over 100 artistic performances of emerging and established folk artists on 11 stages. Mariposa Folk Foundation is a proud member of Folk Music Ontario, Festivals and Events Ontario, Folk Alliance Canada, Music Canada Live and the Archives Association of Ontario.
